She is currently seeking her MFA at IAIA. Selam attended the Oregon College of Art and Craft located in Portland, Oregon prior to graduating with her BFA in Studio Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She is an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and is also of Comanche lineage. The excitement is in not knowing where a painting will lead me, and letting go of control.Ĭarmen Selam was born and raised on the Yakama Reservation located in Washington State. I believe my growth as an artist is a direct consequence of my curiosity and leading with a beginner’s mind. I embrace the challenge of continuing to paint while my condition progresses, which presents opportunities for creative adaptations. Each painting of mine is its’ own exploration with unique discoveries, as I have no interest in doing the same thing over and over again. I don’t know how much time I have left in this body, so I’m creating as much as I can, while I still can. Rather than letting FA paralyze me, I have learned to let it fuel me. Recently, I have been learning to adapt with a continual loss of arm and hand function.

As of 2013, I have used a power wheelchair full time as a result of leg mobility deterioration. I have a progressive neurological disease, Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), which affects my strength, coordination, control and energy. In 2020, I discovered my purpose and have passionately pursued painting since then. I have continued my training at Santa Fe Community College, where I have learned many new techniques from teachers and classmates.Īl Kittel – My life is marked with urgency. I was introduced to formal training at Capital High School where I could bring my imaginary world to life in ceramics. Adam Emery – I started creating art at a young age, to deal with everyday stress from Autism and ADHD.
